Black History Month at GFT

This year’s Black History Month combines documentary, archive and feature film to bring a programme that the explores intersectionality of Black identity. Cassius X: Becoming Ali focuses on the transformative part of the African-American boxer’s life - the influences of Black Power movement, his friendship with Malcolm X and his conversion to Islam. The immigrant experience and duality of being Black and Scottish is explored as we look back at television documentary The New Scots, 30 years since it aired on STV. We'll close the season with a 4K restoration of Young Soul Rebels. Installation artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien’s 1993 debut follows a Black-British queer DJ and will be followed by a discussion of the film’s themes.

Family stories and their role in archives are further explored with a free workshop with the Moving Image Archive. On Sunday 15 October, Black Scottish History: Exploring Your Family Archive Workshop will explore Black Scottish History through family archives, be that biological family or chosen family. Bring along an item to discuss with the group and also find out more about the archives in Scotland, where more can be found. You can bring objects, photos or film – anything that connects you to your history!

This is a workshop for Black people and People of Colour who want to explore their family history. Book your place here.

The Black History Month at GFT programme is a collaboration with Glasgow Film Theatre and Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights.
